Thanks for all the help!!

  • Mar. 17th, 2008 at 11:12 PM
[info]boyzici has posted the results for last week's quiz. Thank you to ALL of you who helped out. You guys managed to score a total of five points for me!! Yay!! I'm going to go back and unscreen all of the comments, but I won't be replying to them since all of the answers are here (I know, go me for being lazy, right?).

The answers are:

1. Hugh Hefner (Playboy Mansion)
2. Gordon Brown (No. 10 Downing St)
3. George Washington (Mount Vernon)
4. William Randolph (Hearst Hearst Castle)
5. John Major (Chequers)
6. Winston Churchill (Blenheim palace)
7. Adolf Hitler (Berghof)
8. Pope Benedict XVI (Apostolic Palace)
9. Aung San Suu Kyi (Myanmar home)
10. Michael Jackson (Neverland Ranch)

The Cheat!

  • Mar. 15th, 2008 at 11:01 AM
Every Friday, [info]boyzici posts these most excellent quizzes. However, I am awful when it comes to them!! I'm going to follow [info]kingdavey's example and do some extremely blatant cheating (so blatant that [info]boyzici is not even blocked from this entry).

For this quiz, we need to identify a famous inhabitant of each of these houses, either past or present. Quite honestly, if you can just tell me what these locations are, I can probably find a past or present inhabitant on my own. ;)

For example: If the first picture was the White House, the answer would be "1 - George W Bush" or whichever past president/first lady you might select.

This quiz will run until midday GMT on Monday.

Even if you only recognize one or two then please submit your answers as I can use all the help I can get (I don't know even ONE).

I'll be screening comments.

Amazingly, I got most of my guesses right. There were a few questions where I recognized the story/image but didn't know the answer, and even fewer where I knew the answer spot on. Heh, the main reason I knew most of this stuff is because B passes it along.

And now, a poll:

I call shenanigans on this quiz. I don't recall answering any questions about poverty or welfare. I'm annoyed. At least it doesn't say I'm an extremist.

What is your political ideology?
Your Result: Liberal

This quiz has categorised you as a Liberal. You believe in the role of the government to fight poverty, both by means of welfare programs, and economic regulation. You are defined as a progressive in the US, but you are generally favouring of the retention of the current social paradigm.

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

You Are a Red Crayon

Your world is colored with bright, vivid, wild colors.
You have a deep, complex personality - and you are always expressing something about yourself.
Bold and dominant, you are a natural leader. You have an energy that is intense... and sometimes overwhelming.
Your reaction to everything tends to be strong. You are the master of love-hate relationships.

Your color wheel opposite is green. Green people are way too mellow to understand what drives your energy.

I am happy to report I did better on this quiz this time than the last time. [info]holding_on, this one's for you. ;)

Your Score: Advanced

You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 60% Expert!

You have an extremely good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels' questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score.

Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

I've been skipping over most of the quizzes I've seen lately but I had to do this one just to see if I could get all the answers right. There is a four-level quiz out there somewhere that I can't pass with 100%, but it also includes homophones and a few other things that always seem to get me. This one, however, was nice and short, not to mention painless. :)

Snagged from [info]leanbysummer:

You Scored an A

You got 10/10 questions correct.

It's pretty obvious that you don't make basic grammatical errors.
If anything, you're annoyed when people make simple mistakes on their blogs.
As far as people with bad grammar go, you know they're only human.
And it's humanity and its current condition that truly disturb you sometimes.
The It's Its There Their They're Quiz

To those of you who missed my grammar rant, please don't be offended or worried I will tear anyone apart for bad grammar. The only time I'm truly bothered by poor grammar is when I have to pay for it or when it is supposed to entice me to pay for something else (professional writing and advertising).

Someone has too much time on their hands.

Ugh. I need sleep.

Edited to add: This quiz sucks! I'm stuck on 66 and can't get past it. I suppose that's why they call it impossible....

Edited to add (3/11/07):  I'm up to 76 now, but the quiz still sucks.... ;)

Your Job Dissatisfaction Level is 18%

Sure, no job is perfect - but yours is pretty close. You're resepcted by your co-workers and boss. Plus, you usually get credit for your succcesses. Don't quit, unless you know you've got something better lined up.

I actually like my job right now. I have a great schedule. I work with great people. I love the customers. I think I'll hang onto it for a while, at least until the baby is born. During maternity leave, I'll have to evaluate just how much I like staying home with the baby compared to my job.

Bust

Today was quite anticlimactic, so much so it was downright depressing.

We found that the house on North Park will require a much larger amount of work than we had originally guestimated. The flooring throughout the house needs to be replaced (we knew that). The kitchen pretty much needs to be gutted except for the cabinets. Both of the full bathrooms need to be completely redone (the half bath is in decent shape minus the floor). There is some water damage in the kitchen, garage, master bathroom, and upstairs bathroom. Two windows are cracked and the windows in the master bedroom have lost their seal. All screens will need to be replaced. One of the panels in the garage door will need to be replaced. There is a great deal of wood rot around the outside of the house. One corner of the house is experiencing the beginnings of foundation issues. The banister will need to be replaced. All lighting, fan, and sink fixtures need to be replaced. The HVAC would most like need to be replaced, including duct work (furnace may still be in good condition, though). Every room will require paint on every wall and ceiling. The fireplace will need to be sealed before it is usable again. The security system will probably need replacing since it's looking pretty damn old. The fence will need to be replaced almost all the way around. Kent estimated roughly $30k in extra work and that was interior alone. We have no idea what the plumbing or electric is like.

While tearing out the kitchen, I would honestly love to see the cabinets come out. I'd also love to completely redo the master bath. I don't want to do a half-assed cheap job on either of those, but there is no way we would be able to afford what we really want, not right now, at least. I would love to see wood flooring throughout the entire first floor, except in the entryway, kitchen, and bathrooms. Tile would be perfect for those areas. I think the stairs would look great with wood, with a 3' strip of wood on the landing and then into both bedrooms, with tile in the upstairs bathroom. The landing itself (minus that 3' walk-way) would have an office-friendly carpet installed. I think we would need to replace the water heater with something a little more substantial, most likely a tankless water heater. There are some minor drywall changes we would like to make (wall in the second door on the upstairs bathroom, move the closet door in the gold bedroom, possible change to the pantry in the kitchen). Eventually, we'd like to tear up the cement in the back yard and possibly put in a pool. The front window seat (since the wood needs to be replaced anyhow) would be the perfect place for a box seat for storage (I guess plants would be out of the question there as Chui would certainly claim that window seat for his own). I would love to see a new security system put in as well as a sprinkler system.

What bothered me most about this house is knowing it was a pre-foreclosure. While walking through the house, we found little notes strewn about. It looked like most of them were from the little girl who used to live there. It appears the family fell on hard times, and it truly breaks my heart to see there were children affected by this. There were several bottles of alcohol left behind (mostly emptied), my guess in a poor attempt to drown out sorrows before finally leaving the house where they had lived for the past 7-8 years. In the upstairs bathroom, there was a bottle of Seagram's 7 sitting on top of a handwritten passage from Hebrews 11 (I think it was Heb 11:1 and 6, but I'm not entirely certain - see cut for passage). Taped to the inside of the closet door in the master bedroom was a note the little girl had written to her father apologizing to him in case she had done something to upset him or make him angry, apologizing for her brothers as well. From the note, it seemed like she just wanted him to be happy. It tore at my heart to see how much love this family seemed to have for each other, at least how much love this little girl had for her daddy, and how much love she thought he had for his little angel princess. When I finally got home this afternoon after all of our running around, I just cried. Between all the events today and everything we learned in that house, it was too overwhelming and I just broke down. I pray our child will be as caring as that little girl was and that she knows her mommy and daddy love her and want to do nothing more than to take care of her and make her happy. I pray she never has to go through the heartache these poor children seem to have experienced.

B's mother had gone with us and gave us her very valid and much appreciated opinions. We may not be ready for that house. The only way we could make that house work for us would be for the bank to actually loan us the amount for the house and the repairs, and for the price of the house to drop. We know we're looking at more than $30k in repairs, we just don't know how much more. That house truly has potential. It would make a perfect home for us. Unfortunately, it might just have to wait.

Click here for photos from today's walk-through. It's pretty rough.

In other news today, we went and had a 4D sonogram done and it was truly disappointing. I think we got about three pictures in 4D. I haven't even looked at the DVD yet since I was so upset about how it all went.

We still haven't watched March of the Penguins yet.

Back to life... Back to reality?

  • Jan. 22nd, 2006 at 9:03 AM
I still feel like crap, but not nearly as bad as on Friday. My throat pulled some weird and nasty stuff this weekend, possibly due to the weather front that moved in on us. My uvula was all stretched and icky and gross. It appears to be back to normal now although I'm still constantly clearing my throat. I was concerned this was going to be something worse than a simple head cold or allergies, mostly because I've been so exhausted lately, but it seems things are on the mend. I need all the energy I can muster to continue the excitement/whip that is house hunting!

I'm glad I had my Christmas shopping done early this year. I wish we had had the time and room to really go all out and decorate and bake, but Christmas will still be fine with our few red decorations and our snickerdoodles. Today, we're going to B's parents' house for dinner and Mass, and then we'll head to his godparents' house for a little Christmas Eve party.

I sure as hell would hope this would be possible to do without cheating since I used to teach it, and thankfully it was. There were a few questions where I wasn't entirely positive of my answers, but I still got them right.

I breathed quite a sigh of relief when I saw the score! B would have ridiculed me if I'd missed any!!
