Blah.

  • Job hunt equals much frustration and serious self-confidence destruction and minor depression.
  • Next round of the Friending Frenzy to follow shortly. If anyone else wants in on the action, let me know. I have at least two more people interested.
  • .
  • Thank heavens for new Signing Time videos. Sophie is being terribly cute by searching the house for Hopkins (the frog) right now. I love that kid to pieces!
  • I will eventually get around to responding to the recent post/poll about the crafts. I greatly appreciate all of your responses, even if it was to just vote in the poll. That helps me tremendously.
  • Someone once asked how my username came about. I believe she said something like, "What exactly is a 'sm00bs'?" Well... here's the answer, because I know you're all dying to know. Back in the day, I used to have an AOL account (I mean, really back in the day). I had fun hanging around in the chat rooms there and came up with the screen name of Sm00chies. No idea why, but that's what it was (Smoochies was already taken). In the chat room I frequented, people often called me Sm00 or Sm00byDoo. Sm00byDoo stuck when I moved over to IRC (yes, I'm that sort of geek), so that was my original nick there. Of course, one of my dear friends always called me sm00bs and eventually I caved and just changed my nick permanently. I assumed he just called me sm00bs because it was a shorter version of Sm00byDoo. Apparently, while that was part of it, it wasn't the whole reason. Yes, it had something to do with boobs, even though he'd never seen mine (still hasn't). Silly boys. It's not a very exciting story, but there it is. I kept it because it was my name for years before I started LJ. I tried using ellemenno at one point, but just couldn't get into it.
  • I will hopefully be posting about some of the recent campaigns for BzzAgent. I now have two cans of Oust, a Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner, and coupons to Chili's for free burgers. I'm going to do a little poll to see what opinions other people have of these products soon.
  • If any of you are looking for good music in podcast form, perfect length to burn on a CD for a car ride, check out [info]starpush's monthly release of Soundtrack. This last Show, Class Is in Session, is excellent! I know some of you share my taste in music, and even B found this show entertaining. I highly recommend it!
  • One of these days I'll get around to playing with icons. I think I need a little play time.
  • It's time to get really serious about my sewing. I might even take a class or two. The more I think about it, the more I want to make the Etsy thing work.
  • Eventually I'll get some pictures and videos posted of Sophie. I just have to get the videos uploaded and go through the pictures.
  • Gah. Much stress weighing be down right now.

Carry on.

Random bits

  • Mar. 11th, 2008 at 2:51 PM
I have pictures to share... later.

For now, two videos, some random info, a link, and a request.

Thanks to [info]kingdavey for sharing this one:

Thanks to [info]dantex for finding this one:

Attention Devo fans... and Yo Gabba Gabba fans: Heh, Mark Mothersbaugh from Devo is the Mark who draws on Yo Gabba Gabba! I found this out a while ago and completely forgot to mention it. That show is just chock full of goodness.

More for my own reference than anything else, this is a handy little zipper tutorial, shared with me by [info]msbluerasp. Thanks! I think I will have to make a few of those little pouches. :)

Request: This is a request for anyone on my f-list or not, whoever wants to participate. I know there are some music fans out there who might enjoy this project.

First, let me give a little background... I don't have a problem with most music made for children. I would just like to have other options for when people who might not have children are with Sophie and me in the car (or when B tires of Sophie's music). We love all sorts of music, and the For the Kids series is one of our favorites. We also love Ralph's World and They Might Be Giants.

Now, for the actual request:

Create a CD of music YOU like that is suitable for children's ears. Please, no swearing, no illicit drug use, no crazy sex references, etc.. Remember, The Kritter isn't even two yet. ;) I don't really want her running around singing "Nookie" or "Don't Marry Her" around the neighbor kids. Please have the playlist contain roughly 15 songs or so. Most importantly, please explain why you made the selections you did. Just post them (artist and song) as a comment to this entry. Feel free to create an album cover and label the compilation if you'd like. Go nuts with this!! Show me your creativity! :)

Edited to Add: I meant to mention the new Knitty is up. Yay! I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but it's on my list of things to do today.
Skeezed from various LJ friends....

The 100 Most Annoying Pop Songs We Hate To Love* Meme.
Let's see how sad you really are.
Bold the ones you like (if you dare!) then count them up and use your shameful total for the lj-cut text.
Add reasons if you dare.

TMBG RMW!

  • Mar. 5th, 2008 at 1:56 AM
I have to say, that was the best concert I think I've ever attended, and I've seen They Might Be Giants before this. Seriously, they just get better and better. The opening band, Oppenheimer, was excellent as well.

B and I met up with friends at Two Rows in Dallas for dinner before the show. The food was excellent and the beer was interesting. B ordered the Route 66 beer which was okay. He then ordered the Hefe Weizen which was good, but reminded us both of circus peanuts for some reason. Strange. We split some onion rings waiting for Cynthia and James, then we both had dinner salads, and split the California Club (which I couldn't finish) and the Tomato Basil Grilled Cheese Soup (yes, soup.... and darn good soup, too!). We left with just enough time to get to the show and sat down just after Oppenheimer started their set.

Oppenheimer was quite fun. These two guys from Belfast seriously rocked out. There was so much energy on stage and they were great entertainers. I'm very glad we made it for the opening act.

TMBG played some of their best songs tonight, including Ana Ng, Birdhouse, Why Does the Sun Shine, The Mesopotamians, Dr. Worm, Alphabet of Nations, Damn Good Times, 12 Dozen Monkeys, and much more. The Johns were awesome as always, with Flans running around everywhere (difficult to believe the man is 47 and still running around like a nut bag on stage). Dan Miller rocked on his guitar, especially when he did the intro to Istanbul. They came out for two encores, which were both awesome. I sang along the whole time and screamed so loud I almost went hoarse.

I think there was less chatter tonight than when we saw them at Trees a few years ago (doesn't bother me either way, Flans and Linnell are pretty funny guys). The music wasn't too loud, even though my ears were ringing after the concert. They stopped ringing before we got home, which is always a good thing. I would not mind seeing another band perform at House of Blues. We were upstairs in the balcony with assigned seats and it was so nice to not have to fight for a spot on the front floor.

Now, if they'll just come around to do a kids' show so we can take Sophie. She's always asking to watch the ABC's and the 123's. I think she'd have a blast with them.

  • Two green links to share:

  • I submitted an entry to the craft blog last night. I'm still waiting for it to post. It has pictures of the bibs, but I'm going to post the pictures here as well (click images for larger view).

  • .

  • I'm going to invest in a few books (probably mostly used) listed in this list of top 50 children's books (thanks [info]kingdavey).

  • The Great Wolf Lodge sounds like a seriously cool place to spend a weekend. One of my friends took his family this weekend. I can't wait to hear how it went since it really seems like it would be a blast.

  • A friend of a friend is trying to raise money for an emergency situation. She takes beautiful photographs. Please check them out. [info]holding_on, would you like to share some information about pricing and how to order here? I'll edit the entry if you do.

  • For those of you mystery shoppers out there, I have another legitimate mystery shopping site for you to check out.

  • For those of you still blogging for money, PayU2Blog is another site that seems to be legit (I have another friend who uses it). I haven't really checked it out, but I trust her.

  • For those of you interested in the whole BzzAgent thing but still not sure, I just signed up for three more campaigns. One is for the Scrubbing Bubbles shower spray, one is for some sort of Oust spray, and one is for Chili's burgers. I'll be posting separately about these later, but thought I'd share a little now.

  • B is playing in a Hafla tomorrow night. I'll most likely be taking Sophie unless she's a serious turkey tomorrow and doesn't nap at all.

  • TMBG is less than two weeks away!

Hmm... I've really got a lot of nothing.

A little bit of happiness...

Tagged by [info]billzy:

The rules are easy, just post 10 things that recently made you happy! Then tag 10 people to post this meme in their journals. Because it is good. Everyone needs a little happiness once in a while.

  1. Sophie saying, "I love you, Mommy!"
  2. Sophie asking me to draw with her.
  3. Sophie asking me to dance with her.
  4. B thanking me for making dinner (he does this all the time and I love it!).
  5. Flipping through a couple sewing books for ideas and actually getting excited about sewing.
  6. Finishing all the boat panels in the Boats for Cameron blanket and moving on to cables.
  7. Being able to knit a cable for the first time without too many issues.
  8. Buying TMBG tickets for the March 4 HOB concert.
  9. Hanging out with the neighbors for hamburgers and hot dogs.
  10. Taking Sophie to the park and watching her light up while climbing and sliding and swinging.

Whole lotta rock

  • Feb. 1st, 2008 at 2:10 AM
  • It's rather exciting that NBC is picking up an American version of the BBC favorite, Top Gear, but I am so disappointed Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond are all begging off. There are no Americans who will be as cool as those three.
  • I don't know that there can be anything clear about politics, but Real Clear Politics is certainly giving it a try.
  • .
  • Tickets have been purchased for the March 4 TMBG concert. I'm looking forward to it!
  • Sophie will now have an "I love you" battle. She'll say "I love you, Mommy (or Daddy)" and if we respond with "I love you, Sophie," she'll repeat what she said. The more she repeats it, the more frustrated she gets. It's terribly cute (especially with her tiny little voice) and just doesn't get old.
  • I think after Good Eats, The Colbert Report is probably my favorite show on television these days.
  • I have not met a Simply juice I haven't liked (yet).
  • Someone in one of my knitting communities was kind enough to share a link to Yarndex. I've been looking for something like this for a while now.
  • I had a rock, but I think it fell through the hole in my bathrobe pocket.

Jan. 29th, 2008

  • 10:47 AM
  • Apparently the current Miss America is from my home town. Ooh.
  • Blue's Clues still rocks after all these years. I'm even getting used to Joe (Steve's replacement). Blue's Room, on the other hand... well, the jury is still out on that one.
  • .
  • Sophie is now a climber and a bouncer. Unfortunately, she likes to climb and bounce together. This could be a problem in the future.
  • Speaking of the Kritter, she didn't go to sleep last night until well after 10:00 PM. She also didn't wake up this morning until almost 9:00 AM.
  • TMBG is coming to Dallas House of Blues March 4. I really want to go.
  • There is another (possibly the same) opening with the company that was begging me to interview at the end of the year last year. I submitted my resume again. I think it would be an interesting place to work, still using Aloha but not working for Aloha. We'll see if I get a phone call.
  • I managed to get all the boats done on the baby blanket during our trip to Tennessee. I've started the cables. I love cables.
  • It is seriously windy today. I would not be surprised if we lost a fence panel or two. It's warm enough to have the door open, too (although it's about to be closed).
  • Words of Wisdom from today's Yo Gabba Gabba!: Don't bite your friends.
  • I have a headache, laundry to do, dishes to do, a Kritter to put down for a nap, a whiny dog, and a big ol' dirty rock.

Music lover links

  • Dec. 17th, 2007 at 10:30 AM
I just read about AllMusic. Maybe this site has been around for a while, but I've never seen it and I wanted to share it. If I've been living in the dark and this is old news (like last.fm was when I finally caught that wave), please spare me that information. Another link for those of you who love to listen to music but don't have mp3s or CDs nearby and have a high speed internet connection, check out Pandora (this one isn't new, but I don't think I've shared it before).

If there are any other worthwhile music related sites out there, please feel free to share them. Thanks!

My Own Personal DJ

  • Oct. 16th, 2007 at 1:05 PM
I have had this song stuck in my head all morning long. I have no idea why. I don't even remember the last time I actually heard it. I'm pretty sure it's been years. I swear, there's a DJ in my head with a mind of his own and he doesn't consult me on the playlist.

I know the A/V is out of sync for that video, but it's still a killer song. I absolutely love Dusty Springfield. I don't think there's a song I've heard from her that I didn't like. My all time favorite song from her is probably Son of a Preacher Man, though. I love it.

It doesn't get much better than that.

Indie Rockin'

  • Oct. 15th, 2007 at 10:52 PM
I have long been a fan of indie music. I used to listen to an excellent station when I lived in the Detroit Metro area for my fix (89X, anyone?). I don't think they still exist, but it doesn't much matter since I live a bajillion miles from there anyhow.

I think IndieMV will be my new supplier. I love their slogan: IndieMV - Musical Intercourse (bringing music and people together). They have these cool little sliders that will allow you to set your preferences and help you find the music you want to listen to without having to listen to the music you don't. This really is a pretty neat concept, the way this works. It's nothing like last.fm (which I love). It's very different, yet very powerful and very awesome, at least from first glance.

What a long strange trip it's been...

  • Oct. 9th, 2007 at 12:48 PM
I was watching an episode of That 70's Show the other day and all the kids were sitting around trying to decide on a quote for their senior yearbook. We didn't have quotes, so this was a bit foreign to me, but the way I understood it to be is they were trying to select a quote that would be placed under their senior year photo. Kelso popped up with "What a long strange trip it's been," and everyone gave him grief about it being the most overused quote in history.

While I might enjoy the music of the Grateful Dead, I don't know that I've ever heard Truckin' before. Up until seeing this show the other day, I don't know that I've ever even noticed that line anywhere else before, either. Since then, however, I've seen it in print at least twice. I believe once was in the most recent Sunday Startlegram (Star-Telegram for you purists out there), and the other time was in one of B's magazines (I think it was Time 10/08/07).

They really weren't kidding when they said it was the most overused quote in history.

Play It Again!

  • Sep. 28th, 2007 at 11:02 AM
I have found some of the best music editing software I have ever seen, and I'm only using the free software this company has to offer! I remember playing around with something similar (but not nearly as advanced) years ago on our Tandy (yes, a Tandy). I absolutely love this stuff. Yakizakana, this might be fun for you to play around with, too.

I'll have to show it to B so he can use it for his drums. It might help the people in his classes, but I don't know how many of them actually read music. I also am not sure if it will work with the sounds of a doumbek or not. I don't know enough about music for percussion to know the difference.

I am so excited about this software. I really want to play around with it! Now, if I can just find the time... ;)

Yaa Halla, Y'all

  • Aug. 21st, 2007 at 1:52 AM
Sunday, B went to Grapevine for some drum workshops and that night there was a performance of all the belly dancers and drummers. I took Sophie and we both had a blast. She gets so excited when she sees her daddy playing the drum and she absolutely loves the dancers. She was clapping and dancing and just having a grand old time. It was a terribly late night for her (she fell asleep for a bit of the show) but I think it was worth it. I know I enjoyed it! I think one of my favorite dances was performed by Meera, one of the instructors for the Yaa Halla workshops. We also saw [info]tabla_malachi and [info]reneat perform (and perform well, I should add).

Man, those ladies can move.

A little rain never hurt anyone

  • May. 29th, 2007 at 1:50 AM
We had a blast today at Scarby, of course. B, Sophie, B's mother, and I all braved the elements today and enjoyed every minute of it, even the muddy shoes and wet clothes. The forecast called for a 70% chance of rain. It rained for a bit this afternoon, but other than that (and the mud before and after), the weather was wonderful. It was a bit humid (which caused my glasses to fog randomly) but tolerable.

Sophia was a super trooper (shoutout). She entertained during the rain and kept everyone smiling. She danced with the drums of the belly dancers and the bagpipes. She cheered during the parade and popped many fairy farts.

While she was eating lunch today, Sophie signed cheese and then cracker, please. Cheese is a brand new sign for her. It was only introduced within the last week! She's putting words together and understanding the idea of a sentence. I have a feeling we will be going to KidzFest after all. By the way, if you look closely at the beginning of the video you'll see Sophie sign Daddy. :)

We had to trudge through much mud, but enjoyed every minute of it. It was pretty difficult with the stroller, but then I realized the stroller actually kept me on my feet. When I tried to walk to the Privies without the stroller I found myself slipping a lot. I'm just glad I didn't land on my face (or my butt, for that matter).

I picked up an Ocarina. I can't wait to give it a whirl. I didn't buy a bamboo flute this year, although I did consider it several times. I found a bodice dagger I absolutely love (they have no bodice daggers online that I could find, though) that was a double garnet with beautiful cuttings in the dagger. It was a bit too rich for the pocketbook at this time, though. I think that will have to be a finishing touch to the costume I don't have yet.

I thought I had more to mention about today, but apparently not.

20070528: Sophia dancing while Daddy and the other drummers played for the Isis dancers
... by not having iTunes, but today I am missing out on more than they realize.

They Might Be Giants has released The Else to iTunes today and will not be releasing the pressed CD until July 10.

Narf.

They have another album coming out this year but I'm not sure when it will be released. It will be the sequel/prequel (depending on which John you ask) to Here Come the ABC's entitled Here Come the 123's.

I am sticking to my guns and not installing iTunes until the computer is reinstalled, which shouldn't be too long from now. Of course, iTunes is just one more reason for me to have a dual boot since there doesn't appear to be a Linux version available.

Have I mentioned I love Last.fm?

  • Apr. 30th, 2007 at 12:38 AM
Last.fm users:

Thanks to [info]itsdavesblog's post in his Last.fm blog, I found this little gem. This script lists a user's top 20 overall artists and lists the 8 most similar artists to each one, then deletes any repeated artists.

The idea is to see how varied your taste is; a score of 9 is extremely unvaried while 160 represents an extremely wide variation.

Hmm... and I haven't even listened to heavy metal or showtunes yet. ;)

Yet another video site...

  • Apr. 19th, 2007 at 1:24 AM
I happened to stumble across fliptrack tonight. While it may be another video site, it's not like other video sites. They have music on the site that can be paired with photos to make videos. It's not like YouTube or AOL Video or whatever other brazilian video sites are out there. From what I can tell, Fliptrack videos can be embedded on several journaling sites. They even have a handy dandy little Fliptrack utility that can be downloaded.

I can see us making a video of Sophie to send to my family at some point, especially since it appears to be entirely free.

Note: They have a little Barenaked Ladies contest going on right now. Maybe I should enter...

last.fm

  • Apr. 19th, 2007 at 12:50 AM
Thanks so much to [info]itsdavesblog for the reminder that last.fm exists.

I typed in They Might Be Giants (big surprise there, right?) tonight and the second song to play was Susanne by Weezer (shout out to Kevin Smith!) and the song directly after that was Blister in the Sun by Violent Femmes. These are both songs I love. I'm pretty excited about the possibility of discovering new music, as well. In all actuality, I can see myself spending way more time than I have playing with last.fm.

My last.fm page is here (still in its infancy - may remain that way for some time). If anyone reading this has a last.fm account, feel free to add me. My music taste is all over the place (and yes, I do actually enjoy listening to most children's music), but if I had to name one particular genre (OK, two) it would have to be Indie and 80's alternative.

Andy McKee is not alone!

  • Mar. 31st, 2007 at 10:17 PM
I believe I am now a big fan of nearly everything released by CANdYRAT Records. How is it possible to be a fan of guitar and never hear of fingerstyling? I am so out of the loop! I have spent the better part of tonight watching many of the fabulously awesome videos on rpoland's YouTube page.

These men are amazing!

Miscellaneous T

  • Chui is a pain in my butt. We are sending him to live with his mother.
  • Sophie had a "fall down go boom" experience today. Big boom, big tears. Poor baby girl.
  • -
  • The more I do it, the more I like the walk around our park. It's roughly two miles from the house and back.
  • I have rearranged the nursery in hopes that a fence may actually be seen on the back wall (and to encourage someone to construct said fence). I like it much better now.
  • All of Sophie's old clothes have been sorted. I need to determine if I'm going to sell them or give them to my sisters. I'm guessing I'll be doing a little of both.
  • B is sick. B is never sick, but he is sick now. Not fun.
  • I love The Divers.
  • We're still waiting for more info from the pool guy. Fingers crossed he doesn't get hit again on his way over tomorrow night.
  • I have a lot of knitting to do.
  • I hate Sprint.

Update, quick hit style

  • Feb. 19th, 2007 at 11:30 PM
  • Sophie claps her hands now. She also sings and dances to certain songs. I love my little entertainer.
  • Chui is a hunter. He hunts "real good." He got himself a possum!
  • -
  • A pool would be awfully nice.
  • Our subdivision has a very nice walking path.
  • Short ribs are tasty.
  • Sprint may have redeemed itself with our new phones. So far, no out of service beeps and pretty decent battery life. We'll see how it goes, though.
  • Ralph's World is truly fun kids' music.
  • The Divers are coming to Dallas for a concert.
  • I suppose I ought to start planning Birthday Celebration Number One soon, not like I don't have anything else to do.
  • I just learned sad news about someone I knew through work. I didn't want to believe it at first, but it was confirmed. Prayers and good vibes, Mr. Surprised.
  • Fisher-Price/Mattel can bite me.
  • Finding replacement parts for old toys (Evenflo's Ultrasaucer and Fisher-Price's Step and Play Piano) is frustrating.
  • I have a blue rock (lapis) on my mantel thanks to my brother-in-law's trip to Afghanistan. That's about all I've got.

Weak song lyrics post

  • Nov. 4th, 2006 at 8:08 AM
Song: Heaven
Artist: Live

You don't need no friends
get back your faith again
you have the power to believe
another dissident
take back your evidence
it has no power to deceive

I'll believe it when I see it, for myself

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset and I perceive

I sit with them all night
everything they say is right
but in the morning they were wrong
I'll be right by your side
come hell or water high
down any road you choose to roam

I'll believe it when I see it for myself

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset and I perceive, yeah

darling, I believe, Oh Lord
sometimes it's hard to breathe, Lord
at the bottom of the sea, yeah yeah

I'll believe it when I see it for myself

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset and I perceive
I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset
I can see the sunset
I can see the sunset
I don't need no one
Ohhhh
I don't need no one
I don't need no one
I don't need no one
To tell me about heaven
I believe
I believe it, yeah

B made me listen to this song and it made me cry. It probably made him cry, too. We're both just a couple of saps when it comes to Sophie.
