Popping in really quick...

  • Apr. 13th, 2008 at 12:26 AM
Anna is still here (they leave Monday morning) and the girls are having an absolute blast together. It makes me sad we don't live closer because Sophie's missing out on getting to know her cousins and the rest of the family.

One of the things that has just surprised me to no end is she looks so big compared to Maddy. I don't remember Sophie ever being as small as Maddy and that makes me sad. I know she was since I have photos and videos to prove it, but I swear those memories are completely lost without the digital images.

Tonight, the girls took a bath together. I might post a picture later but the camera is currently in the office charging and I don't care to get the card out of it right now. I hope to remember to get more pictures of Maddy tomorrow while the girls are playing. She's such a giggly little girl, so I'll try to catch a couple videos as well.

Heh, I don't want them to leave. :(

Memerific

  • Apr. 2nd, 2008 at 11:25 PM
Ganked from mrsbkwod, with a few extra questions at the end....

  • Age: 36

  • Where did you grow up: Near Detroit, MI mostly

  • WHAT DO YOU CALL:

  1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks. Either a crick or a creek. I actually use both interchangeably. Thanks, Dad.
  2. What the thing you push around the grocery store is called. Typically, a cart, although I have called it a buggy before.
  3. A metal container to carry a meal in. Lunch box?
  4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in. Frying pan
  5. The piece of furniture that seats three people. Sofa, although sometimes I say couch.
  6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof. Gutters or eavestroughs (same thing to me... spell checker doesn't like eavestroughs, though)
  7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening. Front of the house is porch, back of the house is patio. Don't ask me why I do it that way... it's just what I say.
  8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages. Grew up saying pop but now I say soda.
  9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup. pancake
  10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself. sub (grinder just sounds dirty to me)
  11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach. swim trunks or (heaven forbid) speedos (yeah, I know it's a brand... does anyone wear non-speedo speedo like suits?)
  12. Shoes worn for sports. Originally, gym shoes... then tennis shoes... now sneakers (although I have called them Keds in the past even though they usually weren't).
  13. Putting a room in order. Cleaning? Tidying? Straightening? Never really had just one word for that.
  14. A flying insect that glows in the dark. I use lightning bug and firefly interchangeably.
  15. The little insect that curls up into a ball. Roly-poly or pill bug, I use them both.
  16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down. I use both teeter totter and see saw.
  17. How do you eat your pizza? Depends on the pizza. Stuffed is with a fork and knife. NY style is folded. Deep dish, if hot, is fork and knife, or with my hands if cool enough to pick up and not have toppings slide every which way.
  18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff? Garage or yard sales
  19. What's the evening meal? Dinner or supper, use them both.
  20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are? Basement
  21. What do you call the thing that you can get water out of to drink in public places? Drinking fountain.
  22. Do the words pen and pin sound the same or different? Different!
  23. When addressing a group of people, what phrase do you use? Typically, I use you guys, although sometimes I use y'all.
  24. Does the vowel sound in the word pinch sound more like the sound in thin or mean? thin
  25. What is the name of a large window in the side of a house that can be opened for entry/exit? door wall (or sliding door, but not as often)
  26. What do you call the machine in the kitchen that keeps food cold? Fridge or refrigerator

Your turn!

Seven

  • Mar. 28th, 2008 at 10:53 PM
I've been tagged by Becki to provide seven random facts about myself.

The rules? Yeah, leave it to me to change them, because I can (and because I've done this before)

  1. Link to your tagger and post these rules on your blog.
  2. Share seven facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
  3. Tag seven people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
  4. Let them know they are tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Now, let's see if I can come up with seven new items!

  1. I have now had the chicken pox three times. Go me!
  2. I love They Might Be Giants probably more than any other band, ever... well, or rather have loved them longer than I've ever loved any other band.
  3. I have been salmoned.
  4. I would love to be a total June Cleaver, just in jeans and a t-shirt.
  5. I like lemon cake more than I like chocolate cake. I have yet to try a chocolate cake that is as chocolaty as I want it.
  6. I absolutely love peanut butter and bacon on English muffins. I rarely ever eat it, but I think it's awesome.
  7. Becki was my absolute best friend while we were in grade school and I cried when she moved away. Thankfully, she lived very close to my grandmother and my father continued to have his hair cut by her father so we saw each other frequently while we were young. Heh, I miss the sleepovers and watching Silver Spoons (or trying to do so, and being extremely upset that football or some equally lame sport at the time was on, preventing our show from coming on!) and her mother's most excellent cooking and going to the beach and skating in the basement and trading stickers and various other cool things we did when we were young. Wow... talk about a trip down memory lane. I didn't realize I remembered all of that! ;)

Snagged from [info]rodshark

  1. What kind of car would you buy? If I won the money today, I doubt I would buy a new car. If I won it in a few years, I would probably buy some sort of hybrid or electric vehicle or something.
  2. Where in the country would you move? If I moved anywhere, it would be back to Michigan to be near my family.
  3. What kind of house would you buy? One that fit my lifestyle (not much larger than what we have now). I think I might want a couple extra rooms, but other than that, very similar to what we have. I do think we'd probably have some sort of ecologically sound home, though.
  4. Would you give your family any money? Most definitely, my parents, my sisters and their families, my in-laws... Not sure how it would be split up, but they'd get a large chunk of it.
  5. What charity would you donate to? I would donate time before donating money, but I'd most likely donate to the American Cancer Society and probably some sort of children's charity as well as some environmental charity.
  6. Would you give your friends any money? That's a tough call. If I did, I wouldn't make it public knowledge (and would be annoyed if they did) and it wouldn't be nearly as much as I would give my family.
  7. Where would you go on vacation? Possibly Hawaii, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland, Greece, Italy... tour the US... then again, I would want to do it in as ecologically friendly a way as possible.
  8. What luxury item would you buy first? Wouldn't be able to answer that until it happened.
  9. Would it change your life? Probably. I'm sure there would be people coming out of the woodwork claiming blood relations or close friendships, etc. B and I might fight about how it's spent. Yeah, it would probably change my life, although not necessarily for the better.
  10. Would you save any of it? Definitely.
  11. Would it change your current relationship? Possibly, but I hope not. I don't think it's probable, but I'm sure it's possible.
  12. Would you quit your job? If I was working, it would depend, but most likely, yes (or at least cut back on hours drastically).
  13. Would you ever work again? If I quit, possibly.
  14. What one task would you never do again? I can't think of anything I'd rather have someone else do, at least not right now.
  15. What dream of yours would you be able to do? Hmm... stay home with Sophie until she goes to school... send her to an excellent school... get completely out of debt...
  16. Would you change the way you dress? Possibly, but not likely. I would just have fewer stained shirts. ;)
  17. Would you change anything about your body? I would work on getting the weight down, letting money be no issue.
  18. Would you miss anything about not bring rich? I would hope not much of my life would change enough to make it noticeable.
  19. Who would be the first person you tell? B
  20. Would it bring you happiness? The money itself wouldn't, but getting out of debt would help, giving money to those less fortunate would help, and saving for our future would help, but we would have to work at being happy without the money.

  2. When was the last time you cried?
  3. Do you like your handwriting?
  4. What is your favorite lunch meat?
  5. Do you have kids?

It's about that time...

  • Dec. 30th, 2007 at 11:46 PM
2008 is fast approaching and it's time to close out 2007. I'm shoving two memes into one post here, one old and one new (for me, at least).

I've done the "first line of each year" post in the past, I know I have, but I don't think I did it last year. If I did, I'm not seeing it, but that's neither here nor there. Who cares, right? What's important is I'm doing it this year, although I'm sure there are plenty of people who simply don't care about this year, either.

  • January: 01/12 - I'm still alive. I've caught a bug of some sort while in Michigan, but it hasn't killed me yet.
  • February: 02/06 - Flew to Detroit Dec 12 (Sophie was awesome on the way up, and pretty good on the way back) and stayed until Jan 26.
  • March: 03/05 - I don't think I've ever actually noticed a dust storm since I've lived in Texas, but last weekend we had one.
  • April: 04/01 - I think the invites are done, at least the computer portion.
  • May: 05/03 - Other drivers really annoy me, especially those who feel it is unnecessary to pay attention to traffic lights.
  • June: 06/01 - Okay, whoever is hitting LJ with DDoS attacks is really starting to annoy me.
  • July: 07/03 - Last night, B posted a wonderfully short entry with the best link ever.
  • August: 08/06 - It's been a while since I've played this game.
  • September: 09/02 - Since the 4th of July fireworks for our community had to be rescheduled due to rain, they (whoever "they" might be) decided to reschedule for last night.
  • October: 10/01 - I weighed myself this morning and was 2.2 pounds heavier than the first weigh-in which was two weeks ago.
  • November: 11/01 - Last week, B sent me a link to an article from the New York Times Blog listing Five Easy Ways to Go Organic.
  • December: 12/01 - I should really be in bed or cleaning, but I'm sitting here doing the picture dump I promised.

Second meme behind the cut )

I might do a resolutions and reflections post, it all depends on my memory and free time.

Interests Meme (Part 4)

  • Oct. 7th, 2007 at 1:37 PM
If you want to play along, comment and I'll pick seven interests from your profile for you to explain. This round of interests has been picked by [info]strawberry6703.

She also picked 37, Common Rotation, and Jackopierce, which can be found in previous posts.

42: This is the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. Who wouldn't be interested in that? ;) For those of you who don't care to click the external link, it's the brainchild of Douglas Adams, author of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and other books. If you haven't read his writings yet, I highly recommend them.

alpacas: I love these adorable creatures. I want to own a couple alpacas along with the sheep someday. They have marvelous fiber for spinning (which I really do plan to learn eventually).

Alton Brown: This man is my hero. He is so smart and witty and talented. Good Eats is by far my favorite show on television, but I also love Feasting on Asphalt and Iron Chef America. Alton Brown is the only person I know who takes the time to break down all the silly little cooking rules and explain why things are done a certain way. It makes cooking so much easier when the why is understood, too. Since he does this in a quirky Bill Nye sort of way, I love it even more.

budget living: Right now we are a one income family. We are trying to make this work for us, and we keep talking about how important it is for us to have a budget and stick to it. However, it's much easier said than done. We are awful about budgeting and are well aware of this. I've lived off a budget before so I know it's possible. In the meantime, I've made a point to cut back spending on certain luxuries (we rarely go out to eat, for example), and make extra income when possible (blog ads, anyone?). I also write out a grocery list and stick to it and try not to take random unnecessary trips to the mall (those trips almost always wind up in impulse buying). The activities we do tend to be fairly low in cost (half price day coming up at the zoo). Hopefully, we'll have a budget written out soon to see where else we can cut back on our spending.

decluttering: We have gone through periods of time where all we do is accumulate crap. To counter that, we have random periods of time where we go through a serious decluttering. I'm sure the decluttering doesn't happen as often as it should, and we don't get rid of as much as we should. Thankfully, in limiting our spending, we are doing pretty well with managing the clutter right now, but we still have mounds of stuff to eliminate. We've given away some things to various charities and I've sold a few items through eBay and Craigslist. I just really need to crack down on this and get rid of more. I hate having things in the house we don't use, when I know someone else could get some use out of them. We're not so bad that we need to be on Clean Sweep, but we're not minimalists by any stretch of the imagination. This interest goes hand in hand with my interest in organization.

euchre: This particular interest proves I am a child of the north. I don't think it's possible to live in Michigan and not at least know what euchre is. I love card games and haven't had much of a chance to play them since I moved to Texas since I don't know anyone here who plays cards other than poker (which is SO not me). Euchre is a card game that involves trump and following suit and is not entirely dissimilar from the game of hearts. It can be played with varying numbers of players and varying numbers of cards, but usually is played with four people (two teams of two) and the 9-A cards. If you haven't played before and enjoy card games, take the time to read up on it and learn it because it can be quite fun. I skipped many classes for euchre tournaments in college, simply because we would get so caught up in the game.

making lists: This is a sickness I have. For everything I want to do, everything I am doing, and everything I have done, there is most likely a list. I even will make lists of which lists I need to make or have made. B makes fun of me because I'm always making lists. Whenever we're talking about something (I'm sure he can tell I do this in my head a lot), he'll just spout off something like, "Why don't you make a list?" a little bit sarcastically. I don't mind, though, because I usually wind up making a list anyhow. ;) Most of my lists are of the To Be Done nature, because along with making lists, I love to cross things off. It always gives me a sense of satisfaction to write up a list and be able to cross things off as they are completed, much in a "see what I can accomplish" sort of way. Sometimes I will even put things on the list that have already been completed or are about to be completed, just for the satisfaction of crossing them off the list. ;)

Interests Meme (Part 3)

  • Oct. 3rd, 2007 at 12:04 AM
If you want to play along, comment and I'll pick seven interests from your profile for you to explain. This round of interests has been picked by [info]parlet.

This is the third and final round of interests for me (unless someone wishes to give me another list), so here goes nothin'. This one is packed with embedded video so I'm going to place it behind a tidy little cut right about here. )

Interests Meme (Part 2)

  • Sep. 30th, 2007 at 11:20 PM
If you want to play along, comment and I'll pick seven interests from your profile for you to explain. This round of interests has been picked by fbl80 :

Acoustic Guitars: I love the sound of an acoustic guitar. I used to love watching VH1's Unplugged because of this. What happened to the good shows and the music videos? Now it's all just a bunch of crap (except for the I Love the X's shows). Anyhow, I prefer acoustic over any other guitar and would really love to learn to play it some day.

Jackopierce: This is a group B shared with me when we were first dating. I've seen Jackopierce once in concert and I love them. My favorite song of theirs is Vineyard. Yeah, I cheated and copied this from my first entry. ;)

Ice Cream: If there was one dessert I absolutely adore and would hate to give up, it's ice cream. Sure, I love just about any dessert, but nothing comes close to ice cream. My all time favorite ice cream is candy cane or peppermint, but it's so darn hard to find! I couldn't even find it at Christmas time last year. I am also a huge fan of many Ben and Jerry's flavors. I can't stand crap ice cream that is all fluff when it melts. I love ice cream sandwiches (love to make my own) and other novelty ice cream. I can't stand chocolate chips or jimmies/sprinkles on my ice cream, but just about anything else is fair game. I especially love a good ice cream cone from Marble Slab or Coldstone Creamery. Mmm!!

Natural Parenting: I am interested in many aspects of natural parenting. I don't think this is the only way to parent, and I found that not all beliefs in natural parenting applied to us, but I have been able to take a few ideas and use them with Sophie. She sleeps with us and I nurse her to sleep. While that's pretty much the only time she nurses, it's at least four times a day/night, so I believe we're into extended nursing at this point. We do the whole cloth diapering scene (I love it) and I've tried to stick with homemade foods when I can or organic foods when possible. Now, that said, I couldn't get into the whole baby wearing thing and I really didn't think elimination communication was for us, either. I'm sure there are other parts of natural parenting I haven't even explored yet.

Recycling: We are firm believers that every little bit counts and we are doing what we can to leave a smaller footprint. We recycle everything we possibly can and compost most of our food waste. Thankfully, Fort Worth has a wonderful recycling system. More often than not, our recycle bin is full before our garbage bin is, and they're the same size bins. I am extremely frustrated by people who don't bother to recycle out of pure laziness (our neighbor NEVER recycles because he thinks it isn't worth the effort and has told us to just put our recyclables with our garbage when we ran out of room in the recycle bin before). I am also frustrated by cities that don't make it easier for people to recycle (my parents can only recycle cardboard, paper, glass, and #2 plastic through their city). I applaud the apartment complexes and business offices that are making it easier for people to recycle. It's really not that difficult to do. EVERYONE should be doing it! :)

The 80's: I am such a child of the 80's. I loved the music and movies and even the television shows, not so much the fashion. ;) I like the more alternative style 80's music but there was some pop music from that decade that was worthwhile as well. Say Anything and Pretty in Pink were probably two of my favorite movies during that time. I remember my favorite song in '86 was If You Leave by OMD, from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack. I was in love with John Cusack and Andrew McCarthy and... Kirk Cameron! I don't know why it is that Growing Pains was my favorite show because it makes me cringe now, but I thought Kirk Cameron was the absolute coolest guy ever. Of course, that was mid 80's. I finally figured out that Growing Pains kinda sucked, but probably not soon enough. ;) Even though I loved the 80's, I don't think I could handle reliving that era... ever.

WAHM: I am currently a stay-at-home-mom (SAHM) but am looking to become a work-at-home-mom (WAHM). I want to do my part in bringing in money, but I do not want to put my daughter in daycare (multiple reasons). This is one of the reasons I do the whole advertising by blog thing.

I know there is still one more list of entries out there. So far there's only one repeat!

Interests Meme

  • Sep. 30th, 2007 at 12:30 AM
If you want to play along, comment and I'll pick seven interests from your profile for you to explain. This round of interests has been picked by [info]blondieoubre:

Common Rotation: This band opened for They Might Be Giants when we went to see them at Trees a few summers ago. Common Rotation is probably the best opening act I've ever seen. We actually wound up buying a CR CD that night and NOT a TMBG CD. Then again, I think we owned just about all of the TMBG CDs anyhow. ;) Seriously, check out their music if you get a chance. B and I both love them (it says a lot that we agree on this).

DIY (what all do you like to diy?): We pretty much like to do just about whatever we can if possible. It gives such a great sense of satisfaction. I think the only things we refuse to tackle are tougher electrical and plumbing tasks. We don't hire people to take care of our yard (B loves doing it and our yard isn't very big). We don't hire people to paint (I love doing it). I like to be all sorts of crafty whenever possible and would rather refinish a dresser than buying one new. Of course, just because we like to do these projects doesn't mean they always get done... ;)

Domo Kun: Hah, I love this little guy! Domo Kun is a Japanese creation. He's an alien and is addicted to television and he is just TOO cute! There are video clips available all over the innarwebs. Check him out, seriously.

Dream Dinners: I absolutely love Dream Dinners. We have done it for three months now and I don't want to stop! It makes menu planning ten thousand times easier. They always have excellent meal choices, too. We have a greater variety of meals now and we definitely eat healthier side dishes now.

Jackopierce: This is a group B shared with me when we were first dating. I've seen Jackopierce once in concert and I love them. My favorite song of theirs is Vineyard.

Sheep: Someday, I want to own sheep. I think they're adorable, but I want them mostly for the never ending supply of wool! See below.

Spinning: I absolutely love yarn. I love most kinds of yarn (cheap acrylic need not apply, though), but I especially love hand spun yarn. I am dying to learn to spin, but just haven't had time with Sophie and all. I have a drop spindle, but it's a bit of a pain in my butt. I really need to practice with it. I want to be able to say someday that not only did I knit an item, but I also spun the yarn for it. :)

I have two other friends from whom I requested lists (yeah yeah, I know)

  • Copy to your own journal, with all twelve months under a cut.

OCTOBER:

Touchy and easily jealous. Concerned. Loves outdoors. Just and fair. Spendthrift. Easily influenced. Easily loses confidence. Loves children.

I don't tag, but feel free to snag. :)

1. List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
2. Tag seven people to do the same.
3. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag whoever wants to do.

I am not going to tag anyone because most of the people on my friends list have done this already, but I will still fill out the habits/quirks/facts. :)

I was tagged by [info]a_groovy_gypsy

  1. I did not have a boyfriend and was never kissed until after I turned 21.

  2. When applying antiperspirant, each armpit gets the same number of strokes (usually four). Deodorant is the same, but usually gets 10 strokes. No, I don't apply both; I only use one or the other.

  3. I only drink hot tea in the winter and iced tea in the summer (exception to this: when sick in the summer I prefer hot tea, or at a restaurant in winter I will sometimes order iced tea - depends on weather). I can drink hot coffee or iced coffee during any part of the year.

  4. My favorite holiday is Christmas. I don't love it for getting presents, though. I love it for giving presents, making special foods, all the fun decorations, and getting into the spirit of things. I also love to relive my childhood through all the Christmas specials. B tolerates it (barely) because he knows how much I love it all.

  5. I always have to brush my teeth after I shower, even if I brushed them before the shower.

  6. I do not like pears, most beans, and even some ground meat all due to texture.

  7. I like almost all kinds of music, and can tolerate just about anything for at least a little bit. I will never say I don't like something without trying it first.

More Questions :)

  • Aug. 21st, 2007 at 10:55 PM
Questions from [info]rredhead!

  1. So, now I get to recursively ask you 5 questions? Sure. :)
  2. If you adopted, would you go domestic or international? I would be open to either domestic or international. I think it would depend on my situation at the time. I would probably have a difficult time deciding.
  3. If Dream Dinners went organic, what would you put on the menu? This is a tough question. If they went organic, I would also be sure to include vegetarian and vegan meals (even though we're not vegetarian). I would also expand the menu to include 20 meals instead of 14. Anything organic is game, but I would try to stick to local foods especially. I would try to keep beef and pork to a minimum and use more fish and fowl. It's really hard to say since I'm not sure how certain foods would freeze. Lots of research for me to do, I tell ya!
  4. Are you the kind who obsessively orders pictures, or the one who takes them off the camera but not off the computer? This question makes me chuckle because I'm all over the place. I have gone on ordering sprees, but only a few times. I usually take the pictures off the camera and upload them to our server and dotphoto or similar sites. The reason I laugh is because I have pictures on my camera that have been there for about two months. ;)
  5. Do you scrapbook? I don't but I've always wanted to. My fear is that I would go overboard buying supplies. Also, I do not always have a big creative streak. I have been toying with the idea of doing a scrapbook on the computer, though.

A book meme, tagged by [info]gan_chan

  1. Grab the nearest book.

  2. Open the book to page 123.

  3. Find the fifth sentence.

  4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.

  5. Don’t you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

  6. Tag five people.

The first book I grabbed was Darn Good Advice - Pregnancy, but page 123 is a section break and doesn't have sentences on it.

Book: The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy by Vicki Iovine

This is the period when no one is sure whether you are pregnant or just spending too much time at the dessert table, so they don't mention your appearance. However, you can be sure that they are talking about it behind your back. This is when you will be tempted to buy a T-shirt with the motto, "I'm Not Fat, I'm Just Pregnant," but don't.

A look back...

  • Dec. 31st, 2005 at 7:00 AM
I recently read through all of my posts (I failed to tag, of course, so I'll be doing it again some day) and was amazed at how much better this year has turned out than I had expected. This has possibly turned into the best year of my life. I can't remember a time when I was happier.

Here is a little meme ganked from various bloggers. All of these sentences/phrases begin the first post of each month, and all are linked to the original post.

January: I honestly believed all my trouble with Columbia House would be over by Christmas, that I would receive the package of movies for my father at my parents' house in Michigan in time to give them to him as a gift.

February: [15:34] Penny: ARE YOU AWAKE YET? :)

March: Recently, my cousin ([info]smbrach) informed me that my Yahoo! profile was a bit outdated.

April: Today will finish up my first week at Dave and Buster's.

May: Your Geek Profile

June: When B says, "I love you."

July: Yay! It's finished!

August: Ok, I really did take pictures of the stitch markers today.

September: Your Birthdate: October 10

October: December 10.

November: This won't affect everyone who reads my blog, just a certain few, mainly the anonymous posters.

December: B and I went to the ob/gyn this morning for another checkup.

This is behind a cut to save the sanity of my non-knitting friends (not that they were really sane in the first place...)

I think I need to send the extra questions I asked my last giftee to the SP gals. I had some great questions in there. I need to make a new blog for this round for teasing my new giftee.

I really do love the Secret Pal program!!
