Right Click to Resize

  • Apr. 21st, 2008 at 4:39 PM
I used to use XP before the laptop was purchased. As a long time Windows user, I knew to install PowerToys to make my XP experience that much more enjoyable (why those features weren't just included with the OS still boggles the mind). One of the PowerToys upon which I relied quite heavily was the right click option to resize my images. All of my postings for Craigslist have been such a whip since making the move to Vista since that isn't an option (from what I can tell, there are still no PowerToys created for Vista).

However, I have stumbled upon a very clever piece of software that will resize even better than the PowerToy option in XP. Hooray!

For those of you using Windows 2000/XP/Vista and have batches of images to resize, VSO Image Resizer is an excellent tool. I highly recommend it! Best of all, it's free for personal use! :)

Yes, little things excite me.

Quick bit of LJ and Open ID news

  • Mar. 17th, 2008 at 9:44 AM
Apparently now whenever someone uses Open ID to post a comment, there is an LJ ID assigned to them. It is actually possible to add the person using Open ID to your f-list so if you have friends who use other means for blogging and have the Open ID option, I think they can still subscribe to f-locked posts without having to get an LJ account! I'm not sure if that's actually the case or not, but I still think it's cool I can add Open ID users to my f-list.

If you look at my f-list on my profile, you'll see sweetdaisy.blogspot.com (she was my best friend in grade school... was heartbroken when she moved away). Her LJ ID came up as ext_87965 when I received a comment notification in the mail, so you can see how I was able to add her to my f-list.

Seriously, how cool is that?

Now, Rob... when you leave a comment here, use your Blogger ID! :)

nothing exciting here...

Nothing of any importance to see here. Considering redoing the profile page so saving the current one since there's a ton of info there.

Hmm... this is a little fishy

  • Mar. 8th, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Today, while minding my own business, out of the blue I receive the following IM (on AIM).

[03/08/2008 - 13:29:09 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Stop * messaging me
[03/08/2008 - 13:29:33 PM] SM00CHIES: you must have typed the name wrong... i haven't messaged you
[03/08/2008 - 13:29:41 PM] SM00CHIES: i don't even know who you are
[03/08/2008 - 13:29:50 PM] IntriguingSalmon: This is the third time I've gotten a message from someone with "salmon" in their username
[03/08/2008 - 13:30:13 PM] SM00CHIES: interesting... i don't have salmon in my name... but you do
[03/08/2008 - 13:30:22 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Umm no I don't.
[03/08/2008 - 13:30:24 PM] SM00CHIES: see for yourself:
[03/08/2008 - 13:29:50 PM] IntriguingSalmon: This is the third time I've gotten a message from someone with "salmon" in their username
[03/08/2008 - 13:30:13 PM] SM00CHIES: interesting... i don't have salmon in my name... but you do

[03/08/2008 - 13:30:36 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Wtf..
[03/08/2008 - 13:30:37 PM] IntriguingSalmon:
intriguingsalmon (1:28): Hi.
Nauta (1:28): Stop * messaging me
intriguingsalmon(1:29): you must have typed the name wrong... i haven't messaged you
intriguingsalmon(1:29): i don't even know who you are

[03/08/2008 - 13:30:50 PM] SM00CHIES: okay, that's bizarre
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:10 PM] SM00CHIES: i haven't gotten any other salmon messages, but it's possible you have a virus?
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:35 PM] IntriguingSalmon: No, I highly doubt that.
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:41 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Someone is obviously screwing with me.
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:43 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Sorry.
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:50 PM] SM00CHIES: no worries... i hope you get it figured out
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:59 PM] IntriguingSalmon: thanks.

My money is still on Nauta having a virus. Of course, I could be wrong... Perhaps someone is actually messing with me! ;)

Edited to add:

[03/08/2008 - 14:58:46 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Hi.
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:15 PM] SM00CHIES: hello...
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:23 PM] IntriguingSalmon: hello
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:28 PM] IntriguingSalmon: ... person
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:36 PM] * SM00CHIES sighs
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:50 PM] IntriguingSalmon: ooooh it's commented out!
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:55 PM] IntriguingSalmon: programming person?
[03/08/2008 - 15:00:32 PM] SM00CHIES: question... did you message me first or did i message you first? i know what i see, but what do you see?
[03/08/2008 - 15:00:43 PM] IntriguingSalmon: I didn't message you.
[03/08/2008 - 15:00:48 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Do we know each other?
[03/08/2008 - 15:01:02 PM] SM00CHIES: you are the second intriguingsalmon to message me... and i'm guessing your u/n isn't intriguingsalmon, is it?
[03/08/2008 - 15:01:07 PM] IntriguingSalmon: no
[03/08/2008 - 15:01:14 PM] SM00CHIES: okay, have a look at this then:
[03/08/2008 - 15:01:22 PM] SM00CHIES:
[03/08/2008 - 14:58:46 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Hi.
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:15 PM] SM00CHIES: hello...
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:23 PM] IntriguingSalmon: hello
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:28 PM] IntriguingSalmon: ... person

[03/08/2008 - 15:01:42 PM] SM00CHIES: this is the second intriguingsalmon IM i've received...
[03/08/2008 - 15:01:52 PM] SM00CHIES: the person who messaged me, apparently i was their third
[03/08/2008 - 15:02:16 PM] IntriguingSalmon: wtf. that's bad
[03/08/2008 - 15:02:52 PM] SM00CHIES: i actually just mentioned it in my blog... if you do a google search on it, my entry is the only hit, as a matter of fact
[03/08/2008 - 15:03:20 PM] SM00CHIES: i'm going to go do a virus scan... you might want to do the same
[03/08/2008 - 15:03:30 PM] IntriguingSalmon: alright...
[03/08/2008 - 15:03:38 PM] SM00CHIES: sorry for any inconvenience!
[03/08/2008 - 15:04:03 PM] IntriguingSalmon: no. Thank you for your advice. I'm just slightly shocked. I thought you were my programming friend.
[03/08/2008 - 15:04:28 PM] SM00CHIES: i wish i could say i know how to program... unfortunately, I don't. ;)
[03/08/2008 - 15:04:52 PM] IntriguingSalmon: me neither. It's all awesome. :-)
[03/08/2008 - 15:05:58 PM] SM00CHIES: I'm going to close this window. If you'd care to message me again, feel free using any of the connections you can find for me except AIM. I'm going to close that since I'm not sure what's going on here. Nice chatting with you!! :)
[03/08/2008 - 15:06:12 PM] IntriguingSalmon: you too. good bye

Note: If this has happened to you or anyone you know, feel free to leave a comment here. I'm interested now. Anonymous comments are welcomed, but please feel free to sign your name.

ETA part deux: Apparently, all parties involved have been hatted. Why, I have no idea. It was certainly interesting! If you check the comments below, you can see [info]fleathemagician did a little more digging than I did and came up with [info]themissinghat. Bizarre. Very bizarre. Thanks, [info]fleathemagician!

Shared Web Hosting

  • Nov. 14th, 2007 at 1:26 AM
Even though I'm considering going back to work, I'm still very tempted to have my own domain. I don't trust our server here to be reliable enough to host a website for us, so I've been looking into other options. One of the hosting companies I've considered is Concentric, with their shared web hosting plan. I still have some shopping around to do, but their basic plan seems to have about all I'd need. Of course, once I have a plan in place and actually have the website up and running, I'll have a better idea of what I'll need.

I suppose it's time for me to get cracking on CSS finally. ;)

Handy Folders

  • Nov. 2nd, 2007 at 11:02 PM
Okay guys, I'm about to geek out on you for a bit. If you're interested, hang around. I have recently had the pleasure of testing a new (to me) piece of software and I have to admit, I wasn't impressed at first, but the more I've used it, the more I really like it. Handy folders is a great way to access your favorite folders in any program within Windows, as well as Windows itself.

I think one of the reasons I wasn't terribly impressed at first is my extensive use of the Quick Launch bar. I rely heavily on my Quick Launch bar, and have shortcuts to every drive I access on a regular basis (along with many programs and various folders) all laid out for ease of access. Because of this, I didn't think I'd really benefit from Handy Folders sitting in the systray. I've left it, just to see if I would use it or not (I have, amazingly enough).

One of the things I absolutely love about Handy Folders, though, is the functionality of Handy Folders within dialog boxes. When I'm going to open or save a file now, I don't have to worry about browsing through my crazy folder structure (and believe me, it's crazy). I can easily click one of the Handy Folder buttons and get where I want to go much more quickly. I am honestly pretty underwhelmed that Microsoft hasn't thought to add that feature to Windows yet (I'm using Vista, but perhaps it's in the works).

I am not entirely certain I'm as impressed with the website as I am with the software. There are no requirements listed on the website, so I'm assuming this would work with Win9x but I could be very wrong. Of course, I may have missed the requirements, but I went over the site fairly well.

In any case, it's nothing earth-shattering or ground-breaking, but Handy Folders will save a bit of time and frustration, especially within dialog boxes.

Such a Gimp!

  • Oct. 31st, 2007 at 11:22 PM
I've been editing images with The GIMP, and have liked what I've seen so far. I can see all of my images that I've edited when I upload them to LJ when I'm using Firefox but I can't see them using IE. I'm not sure what the heck I'm doing wrong, but that's the only thing I can think of that is different about these images. It doesn't make any sense to me that a simple .jpg file will show in Fx, on my computer, in my LJ gallery, but not in IE.

Anyhow, I've just downloaded Paint.NET to see if I can get anywhere with this program. Fingers crossed it actually works.

The entire innerwebs is borked.

  • Oct. 22nd, 2007 at 8:05 PM
So, apparently OneSource is having issues. Yesterday I had problems hitting anything but Google sites (gmail, google, blogspot, etc) and even that was a struggle.

Now, I'm having issues getting to the Google sites. Just about everything else is fine. Nice.

So much fun.
I'm a little out of touch lately when it comes to the world of computers. A few people have asked me what I would recommend, and since technology changes so quickly, I seriously can't give them an educated answer anymore. I find it frustrating. Of course, then I feel the need to do research (whether it's necessary or not) and then follow up with my friends to let them know, but it's such a pain sometimes. Who has time for that sort of thing?

I have found that Wize.com seems to be pretty cool about offering opinions and ratings for plenty of computer related items. I've looked at their motherboard reviews and processor reviews to help get me up to speed on a few things. Quite honestly, some of the rankings on the page for motherboard reviews surprised me, but like I said, I'm out of touch.

Since these are ratings from various sites pulled into one site and anyone can write a review, I would still take the info gathered there with a grain of salt. I noticed my laptop was one of the top machines listed, but when I read some of the reviews (positive and negative both), I realized not everyone commenting was a top notch sys admin or hardware geek (not that I am either, mind you). What Wize.com boils down to is a conglomeration of opinions of the everyday Joe for the everyday Joe. This way, people get to see how the product has fared with others.

Backup!

  • Sep. 29th, 2007 at 9:27 AM
B and I have discussed the possibility of offsite backup from time to time. We obviously don't have mounds of data that would destroy us if we were to lose it, but it would still stink if somehow all Sophie's pictures got wiped out or if all of the wallpapers I've made and/or saved throughout the years were to just disappear. I've also worked pretty hard at amassing a decent font directory and would really hate to lose that. Anytime@Anywhere offsite backup seems like it could be a viable solution for us. I think that's something we might have to look into.

I know I'm a geek...

  • Sep. 21st, 2007 at 10:55 PM
Over the years I have toyed with the possibility of going through Microsoft certification training. I don't know if that's something I still want to do or not. There are so many computer related things I want to learn. I'm dying to learn HTML (more than what I know now, which isn't much) and CSS. I would love to take Photoshop classes as well. I used to want to get my A+ certification, but again, I'm not so sure now. I think if I were to get certification, though, I would want to go for Oracle training. I know there are plenty of careers I could have if I would just take the time to get the training I need, careers I would enjoy.

I'll continue to think about these ideas. They go around and around in my head. Some day I'll be able to decide what I want to be when I grow up. Maybe.

Good News for First Wave iPhone Buyers

  • Sep. 14th, 2007 at 11:38 PM
I recently posted this about the crappy deal first wave iPhone buyers received. Well, it seems as though Apple has realized how poorly this made them look and decided to give their loyal customers a little bit of a break. Granted, it's only a store credit, and it's only for $100, but it's better than nothing, I suppose. I still won't be buying one anytime soon.

Virtual Servers

  • Sep. 6th, 2007 at 10:04 PM
I know plenty of mothers who are starting their own businesses and working from home. Some of these mothers are setting up websites and having to deal with various web hosting services. Some of them have businesses that are growing quickly enough that they need to worry about mail servers and various other storage for their businesses.

Today, I ran across Virtual Servers, which will allow for web hosting, mail servers, storage, and various other uses. This would be perfect for offsite data recovery. I especially like this for web hosting because it doesn't put limitations on the customers by restricting what tools can be used. Virtual Servers actually allows people to use the tools they need since it's just like having a user account on a local computer without the computer being stored locally.

I know that's a super simplistic way of looking at this, but why be complicated when it's not necessary? Virtual Servers seems to think the same way and has a page that breaks down all the Dedicated Virtual Server Plans. I have to say, it makes it all look pretty easy.

Just how cool do you feel now?

  • Sep. 6th, 2007 at 2:53 PM
This just makes me chuckle. I suppose there is a price to pay for being the cool kid. What *really* makes me laugh about this is there was news this was going to happen even before it was released.

Of course, the price drop doesn't mean I'll be running out to buy an iPhone, old OR new.

What is *wrong* with me?

  • Aug. 13th, 2007 at 2:05 PM
Having a baby must have made me a complete computer idiot. I have a web cam on this laptop. I see the web cam in the device manager and can find the uninstall feature for the web cam. What I can't seem to locate, however, is how to turn on the bloody thing!

I see no mention of it in any of the programs installed on the computer, in any of the help files on the computer, or in any of the literature that came with the computer. Has having a baby reduced my brain to absolute mush that I can't figure out something as simple as a web cam? Have I been out of the tech world too long?

Snag

  • Aug. 9th, 2007 at 11:20 AM
I now remember why it is we put the guest room and office in their current locations.

Cable connection.

There is no cable jack in the guest room for some reason. If there is, I haven't found it yet. It will cost us around $130 to install another jack.

I had to call to have our innerwebs fixed again (yes, the whole innerwebs was down!). While the tech was out here, I was going to ask if I had to call to have the modem moved because I remembered something about signal strength and them maximizing signal or something. As I was about to ask him, it dawned on me we don't have a jack in that room.

*sigh*

Random and totally unorganized

  • Aug. 9th, 2007 at 12:58 AM
  • I am still trying to get the laptop configured to my liking. I've been having issues with Semagic not wanting to work correctly, but they are minor issues. I am still having minor issues with Trillian as well, but that issue is even smaller than the Semagic issue.
  • Probably the most frustrating issue so far is the fact that whenever I try to install the drivers for my old Photosmart printer, the silly thing freezes. *sigh*
  • .
  • Sophie is really becoming rather unbearable with her teething lately. She has been constantly wanting to nurse and has been constantly cranky when I try to redirect her. Since I'm so tired of little miss crankypants, I just cave and let her nurse whenever she wants. Hopefully teething will be over soon.
  • I need to do a little shopping soon. We are needing another car seat for Sophie as well as a potty seat (she has shown a little interest and I don't want to miss my window of opportunity here). I believe we'll also be picking up some jumbo crayons for her. Maybe I should make some chunks for her instead.
  • Speaking of which, I think it's also time for a pudding paint session soon. I think she'll get a big kick out of that.
  • We have another Dream Dinners session coming up this Saturday. Tonight, I made maple thyme pork chops (they were cooked a little too long, but that was all my fault), bountiful baked beans (FIVE different types of beans!), and asparagus. All in all, the dinner wasn't bad. It would have been perfect had I not cooked the meat too long, though.
  • Our lunch today actually used the leftovers from last night's roasted pecan chicken. B and I split the chicken to add to our big salad. It was quite tasty.
  • I knit a little tonight. I have three and a half boats left to finish on this blanket and then I can start working on the cables. I am so ready to be done with this thing.
  • Sophie surprised me the other day with a new sign. She put her hand up near her head and started shaking it. I had *no* idea what she was trying to sign. Then she signed wind and leaf and it dawned on me she was trying to sign tree (which she did pretty well, but I'm slow on the uptake at times). When I exclaimed "TREE!" she got all excited and started nodding her head.
  • Of course, her spoken vocabulary is growing all the time as well. She tends to try to say the longer words and sign shorter words. She says buhnabies (butterflies), cado (avocado), mahnamel (watermelon), bellybuh (belly button), nooduhloos (noodles) and more. The kid cracks me up with the whole butterfly thing, too. She will get stuck on the first part and say "buhnabuhnabuhnabies." Sometimes she never even gets the end out at all. There are some shorter words she likes to say, but not many. She says nuh (nurse), breh (bread), mih (milk), chee (cheese or Chui, depending), cheechee (French toast), pish (fish), pea (peach), appie (apple), and others I don't remember.
  • We had a Rainsoft water filtration and softener system installed a few weekends ago and absolutely love it.
  • B has been looking at sheds, so that will probably be next on the list.
  • Hopefully, B will be able to get to installing the baskets underneath the bathroom sinks so we can finish getting organized in there. As it is right now, I have all of the stuff out of the cabinets and in a laundry basket. I have to keep the door closed to our bathroom so Sophie doesn't wander in there.

Man, I really had a whole lot of nothing to say.

Good and Bad: geeky gadgetry

  • Aug. 6th, 2007 at 2:31 PM
It's been a while since I've played this game. Usually there's an ugly, but I just can't think of anything ugly here.

Good: Yesterday, B and I purchased a new laptop for me.
Bad: We had to wait forever for someone to actually write up a quote (usually we're fighting them off), and then the guy who wrote up the quote failed to take the laptop to the cashier.

Good: We bought an HP Pavilion Entertainment Notebook PC.
Bad: I assumed it would be mostly ready to use (except for a few things to connect) out of the box. I had to wait for software to install (not update, actually install).

Good: I have Windows Vista installed on the laptop.
Bad: I have no disc for Windows Vista. If I want to splash this machine, I will still have to install from restore discs (meh) or will have to use an older version of Windows or Linux.

Good: Windows Vista is pretty slick.
Bad: I have no clue where most of the Windows stuff is now.

Good: HP added quite a few cool tools to the laptop.
Bad: HP installed even more crap on the laptop.

Good: The touch pad mouse has a cool scroll "bar" tool so I'm not moving my mouse all over the place.
Bad: The touch pad mouse is also very sensitive and I wind up hyperspacing my mouse all the time now.

Good: I remembered all my passwords for all my IM clients to plug into Trillian when I reinstalled.
Bad: For some reason I can't seem to get Trillian to load my existing buddy list from my old computer. Versions are the same, but it's still not working.

Good: I won't have to worry about reinstalling my old desktop until all my files are transferred over.
Bad: I have a lot to transfer and for some reason last night neither computer was terribly happy with that idea.

Good: We received a free printer with our laptop purchase (Epson R260).
Bad: I have no idea where to put the second printer, but we have decided we'll probably use both the old and the new.

Good: The laptop has a lot of bells and whistles (even has a remote control!).
Bad: I'll probably never use half of the bells or whistles and the remote control will probably wind up lost because it is so tiny.

Good: The laptop will look very nice in the new office.
Bad: We have to wait until the master suite is painted before starting the new office, although this is good incentive!

Good: Vista has some slick little constant spell check thing happening.
Bad: I see red all over the place when I wordify.

Yeah, in everything I've typed I still can't think of an ugly (well, the desktop was pretty ugly with all the mounds of icons HP leaves on it, but that's neither here nor there). Eventually I'll get the printer hooked up, although I haven't decided exactly where we're going to put it. It will probably stay in the box until the move to the new office, but I want to test it at least.

Overall, this experience was very good. I had to struggle to find bad. I always prefer that over struggling to find good. :)

Surfing with Cingular (the new AT&T)

  • Jul. 18th, 2007 at 12:24 PM
I can't remember if I've posted about this or not...

I use my phone a lot for email and other browsing. I used to use the gMail application, but it won't work on my current phone (Samsung Sync A707). I also don't like the web browser loaded on my phone. Thankfully, I found Opera Mini. This little application is the bee's knees! Both the beta version and the older version have a few bugs, but all in all, I am seriously fond of this browser. It makes it so much easier to browse from my phone, which makes my phone just a little more tolerable.

List of purely random items

  • Jul. 15th, 2007 at 11:22 PM
  • B and I did Dream Dinners this past Saturday morning and loved it. We had a good time and came home with plenty of good food. I am still amazed that nearly 72 servings worth of food fit tightly packed on one of our small shelves in our freezer (we have a side-by-side). We averaged about $3 per serving, which isn't all that bad, unless the serving sizes are on the small side (many times there is too much food) and people take more than an actual serving.
  • Sophie is walking more and more and doing a pretty good job of it. I suppose it's time to find a pair of sandals for her to wear when we're out and about now since I'd rather not put her down barefooted.
  • .
  • The sign repertoire is increasing exponentially. She knows at least 78 signs now. I still think please is my favorite, but wait is awfully darn cute as well.
  • Along with signing, her spoken vocabulary is increasing dramatically as well. She loves to sit up after a nap and point out body parts (making sure they're all still there, perhaps?) and she loves to walk around the house saying "no, no, no" (hmm... wonder why) all the time. She tries to say cheese, avocado, snacks, nap, bottle (for my water bottle), and many others. I love listening to her talk, and I think my favorite word that she says is please, of course.
  • Sophie also loves to sing. Her favorite song is The Itsy Bitsy Spider and she even does motions to it (including the sign for sun). She also loves Pat-a-Cake, but she does it with her feet. She's such a crazy critter.
  • She has been surprising us lately with her little memory and her overall cuteness. Today, while sitting on B's lap in our recliner (the one he tipped), Sophie noticed a picture of herself on the ledge over the recliner, signed baby, and then tried to pose as she was in the picture (too cute!). After that, she pointed over to the DVD cabinet which has pictures on top of it, signed baby and cold (for the picture taken when she was in the hospital), and then she signed Daddy (for the picture of her sleeping on Daddy). She could not see either of these pictures at the time, but still knew they were there. I love watching her little mind in action.
  • Today, Sophie was a very good helper. She emptied all of the diaper wipes out of the laundry basket and tried shaking them for me, and when I asked her to put them back in the basket, she did! She even tucked the wipes that were partially out of the basket back into the basket. She also took all of her toys out of one of her tubs but then proceeded to put them all back in once she was asked. Of course, she dumped the tub again after that but put all the toys back without being asked a second time. I understand a lot of this is a simple game to her, but that's quite alright with me.
  • We made a family trip to the grocery store today, mainly for eggs, but picked up a few other items while there. There were quite a few items in our cart and managed to walk out of there under $70. We also happened to walk out without any eggs. B made a special trip to The Devil to buy eggs for me since I needed an egg (yes, that's right, ONE FREAKING EGG) for the corn bread I made for dinner. Of course, had I not used an extra egg in the potato salad (recipe to be posted later, so be sure to check the recipe blog), I would have been fine.
  • I don't think I've done one thing on my To Do list other than start cleaning off my desk. I need to get the return completely cleared since I will have to put the box on the desk to install the new (to me) drive.
  • Chui escaped again the other day and one of our neighbors was nice enough to knock on our door to let us know.
  • Someday I will get pictures uploaded from the trip, just like someday I'll get my email cleared out from when I was up north as well.
  • People without children and without childhood development degrees who try to tell me how to raise my child, please step off. People with experience raising children and whose opinions I respect, feel free to step in.
  • Ew, two sentences that end with a preposition (too lazy to be bothered to fix them right now, mostly because they're idiomatic phrases that are widely accepted, and possibly even excepted). I am such a grammar freak that it pains me to read anything where grammar, spelling, or punctuation are abused in any way (an entire separate post for a later time). This article made me weep.
  • My computer is still in dire need of being reinstalled. I'm going with a dual boot of Ubuntu and Windows XP and am pretty excited about the Ubuntu (XP is for backup). If anyone has a better idea and would care to share it with me in precise detail, please feel free.
  • Obviously, we have not yet floated away from all the massive amount of rain Texas has received this year. The dog almost floated away, but the house still stands. Okay, the dog really was never close to floating away, although for all the muddy digging he's done I almost wish he had.
  • I have four sailboats left to knit in the blanket for Maddy. I will take pictures once the sailboat panels are complete.
  • My snapdragons have made a reappearance. I don't remember having snapdragons last year, but then again I think I still suffered severe hormone head.
  • If you have a MySpace account and feel like adding friends, feel free to add me. The link is in my profile, but the username is obvious.
  • I've got a rock, but not one nearly as oddly placed as the rock my neighbors have, which sits in the middle of the sidewalk in front of their house.

random quick hits

  • I finally caved and joined the masses at MySpace. Amazingly enough it has put me in touch with people I never thought I would see again, even some people I had almost forgotten. I don't know if I'll bother to copy the blogs from here to there or if I'll just leave the blog there blank.
  • Cordless mouse death makes me sad.

  • We are going to go to Abilene to see Signing Time! Live at KidzFest. I'm pretty excited. I hope Sophie enjoys it.
  • Yesterday while at Target Sophie signed shoes when we passed the shoes and clothes while we were in the clothing section. She also signed bananas when I put some in the cart, but big surprise there.
  • Apparently, some wanker is trying to phish for credit card information via phone. I received a phone call today from 561-204-5441 (probably not the correct phone number) with a pre-recorded message stating something about being eligible for a lower APR and to press one to speak to an agent. I pressed one and the man asked me for my last name. Before giving him anything I asked for the name of the company and promptly heard a distinct click.
  • I have the headache from hell right now and just want to go to bed and sleep it off, but Sophie would much rather play. Silly kid, what is she thinking? ;)
  • The critter is trying very hard to drink out of a big girl cup now. She doesn't want to have anything to do with those silly sippy cups when she's trying to drink water. It's very cute but can also be very messy if I'm not careful.
  • In Texas, all students are required to take the TAKS test at some point (several times, if it's anything like the standardized tests we used to take when I was in school many moons ago). I have no opinion one way or the other about the TAKS test in particular since I don't know enough about it, and I'm not going to voice my opinions about standardized testing right now. I just hope and pray that the person in this picture isn't one of the students trying to graduate without passing the TAKS test.

Hmm. I've got a whole lot of nothin' right now.

Edited to add: This was actually written June 1, 2007, but failed to post until June 4, 2007.

Complete and total randomness

  • Sophie kept trying to sign shoes today. It looks more like more than anything else, but she was pointing at my shoes, so I'm guessing that's what she was intending. While watching the race, she kept signing hat because of all the men wearing caps. I tried talking to her when she was nursing at one point and she signed milk as if to say, "Duh, Mom, I'm busy nursing! I can't talk now!" She has been signing fish a little more often now as well, usually whenever she has wandered over to watch the fish tank in action. I am so glad I bought the new Signing Time! videos for her. She loves to watch Rachel and dances along whenever Rachel sings. I am still amazed at how many signs she remembers and uses on a regular basis.
  • Thank you, PC Magazine, for pointing me in the direction of Opera Mini. It makes me like my phone a little more, which makes me much happier.
  • .
  • I now have a blank hard drive that will be used to install a Windows XP and Ubuntu dual boot. I'm hoping to avoid using Windows at all, but I think I want to have a little safety net in case something winds up not working. I can't decide if I should wait until after I come home from Michigan to do that or not.
  • We will be making the trek to the Great White North the week before Father's Day and staying until the end of June. I'm not sure when B will be going, but I think I would prefer he meet us up there and then we all fly back home together.
  • I hope it stops raining by the time we leave for Michigan. I hate flying in bad weather, and our storms here have been so unpredictable.
  • I think B is in love with the idea of buying a Yaris Liftback. This won't be done any time soon, but I have to admit it's a rather cute car. It surprises me he likes it as much as he does, to be honest.
  • Little Miss will be walking very soon. She is standing more and more on her own and has even added a few dance moves (cute butt wiggles) while standing. I have a feeling she'll be walking before our trip.
  • I think I will be doing Dream Dinners soon. I think I'll be waiting until we return from Michigan, but I'm definitely ready to give it a go.
  • I have one knitting project on my needles and I don't spend nearly enough time working on it. This project is supposed to be a gift for my niece and it's a little late. I'm sure she won't mind, but I still feel awful it isn't done. I won't start anything else until this is finished, which is great incentive. There are so many projects I want to knit and I don't even know where to start.
  • Sophie fell asleep in her highchair at lunch today. I was fixing food for our final trip of the year to Scarborough and she was eating lunch, throwing food to the dog, drumming on her tray, and making her usual noise. I realized after a minute or two that she was completely silent and looked to find her asleep with some of her lunch still on her tray. I felt so bad for the poor critter. What sort of mother lets her child fall asleep in the highchair like that?

The dark side calleth...

Several friends in the past week or two have mentioned I need to make a myspace page. I still think myspace blows, but I may actually cave to get in touch with old friends.

I hate being so torn over something so trivial.

Updated photos and more....

  • Jun. 21st, 2006 at 3:13 AM
Being the geek I am, I created a Gmail account for Sophie. I think I created a blogspot account for her as well, but have done nothing with the page so far (oops). B is just as much of a geek, but also a very loving father, and has been sending adorable little messages to Sophie ever since I showed him the address.

The address is located at the top of the picture pages. Remember, all updated photos will be added to the end of those pages. I'm trying to come up with an easier way to navigate the photos, but this is the easiest way we've found to create an album until I learn real HTML (thank you, Adobe Photoshop).

OpenID

  • Nov. 1st, 2005 at 6:09 AM
This won't affect everyone who reads my blog, just a certain few, mainly the anonymous posters. I have no problems with anonymous posting, but every now and then, someone forgets to post their name. OpenID will allow people to be identified without having to remember to sign the post. I think it even works with TypeKey somehow.

I still haven't decided if I'm going to disable anonymous posting. To all my friends who don't use LiveJournal, let me know what you think, please.

I was exporting our tiny guest list (seriously, I think it's all of maybe 35 people) to a CSV file from The Knot, and when it asked to save the file, I pointed on a file that already existed: "invitations.doc." For some reason, I thought this was the previous export I had saved. What I should have clicked on instead was a little file called "guest list.csv." I have just completely saved over the wording and the two different fonts I've chosen for the wedding invitations. I know the difference between a *.csv and a *.doc file. I feel completely stupid.

At least I have the wording saved elsewhere (thank you, X-Fonter!), and I had the forethought to make sure the font name was at the top of each sample I printed. It won't be difficult to recreate the file; I'm just annoyed that it's necessary at all.

*facepalm*

In a very School House Rockish type way, Get Perpendicular!

Thanks Mikey!
