I have pictures to share... later.

For now, two videos, some random info, a link, and a request.

Thanks to [info]kingdavey for sharing this one:

Thanks to [info]dantex for finding this one:

Attention Devo fans... and Yo Gabba Gabba fans: Heh, Mark Mothersbaugh from Devo is the Mark who draws on Yo Gabba Gabba! I found this out a while ago and completely forgot to mention it. That show is just chock full of goodness.

More for my own reference than anything else, this is a handy little zipper tutorial, shared with me by [info]msbluerasp. Thanks! I think I will have to make a few of those little pouches. :)

Request: This is a request for anyone on my f-list or not, whoever wants to participate. I know there are some music fans out there who might enjoy this project.

First, let me give a little background... I don't have a problem with most music made for children. I would just like to have other options for when people who might not have children are with Sophie and me in the car (or when B tires of Sophie's music). We love all sorts of music, and the For the Kids series is one of our favorites. We also love Ralph's World and They Might Be Giants.

Now, for the actual request:

Create a CD of music YOU like that is suitable for children's ears. Please, no swearing, no illicit drug use, no crazy sex references, etc.. Remember, The Kritter isn't even two yet. ;) I don't really want her running around singing "Nookie" or "Don't Marry Her" around the neighbor kids. Please have the playlist contain roughly 15 songs or so. Most importantly, please explain why you made the selections you did. Just post them (artist and song) as a comment to this entry. Feel free to create an album cover and label the compilation if you'd like. Go nuts with this!! Show me your creativity! :)

Edited to Add: I meant to mention the new Knitty is up. Yay! I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but it's on my list of things to do today.

I can't create anything for you, but I can recommend the children's CD's made my They Might be Giants. Even their grown up CDs were kind of quirky and playful, but when they became fathers they started making music for kids that wouldn't drive adults insane.

I have them all already. ;) That's how much we love TMBG.

We watch the ABC's and 123's ALL the time now. Sophie says, "Be Giants ABC's right now!" I have a feeling most of their other stuff will work as well (and I've played it for her before successfully). I wish there was a DVD for No! She'd love that one, too.

Someone mentioned their next kids' project is going to be a science themed album. I really hope that's the case. :)

Well, I don't know about an entire playlist, but some artists I'd recommend are Kate Rusby (I love the Little Lights album), who's kind of English folk music based and Norah Jones.

I've developed a mild Josh Grogan addiction of late too (I believe he's classically trained, but I've heard a few lovely ballads/popish songs of his too).

There aren't many of my CD'S I won't play when Hannah's here (though I do refrain from my Paula Cole type stuff). Most of it is fairly old fashioned...The Eagles, Joni Mitchell, Gershwin stuff, Eva Cassidy, Elvis, Bette Midler.

Some of Dave's rockier stuff I certainly wouldn't play...Iron Maiden and Guns n Roses, talented though they are, can wait until she's a teenager, LOL.

I'll have to check out Kate Rusby. I like Norah Jones.

My taste in music pretty much covers all the stuff you like... AND all the stuff Dave likes. ;)

Thanks!!

No problem :o)

Music is a huge part of my life. Admittedly, I'm a trained singer who never sings, lol, but I can't imagine getting through a week without music being on, even if I just listen to it on my headphones.

(Which I think Dave prefers, because apparently he's actually caught me humming without realising with my headphones on, lol. I think he's holding out hope that I might slip and he'll actually get to hear me sing, LOL)

Josh Groban is classically trained, I think he was a support act for Charlotte Church once upon a time.

He's very cute and probably gay. I have one album, and it gets a bit soppy.

I love The Eagles too, they're great, although I'm not sure some of the songs would be suitable for kids.

When I was little, I loved Boy George/Culture Club and Karma Chameleon. It was my absolute favourite!

Hah, I loved Culture Club!! :) I loved every song they ever had on the radio but never actually bought a tape. I think I have a few mp3s now.

I was never a Boy George fan...I was a strange kid, I loved Patsy Cline, John Denver and any old sixties rock and roll type music.

Although I did go through a brief Kylie and Jason phase, I have to admit, lol.

I love the sixties stuff too. I'm not sure if I'll enjoy the module later on where we have to study the sixties though, but hey, we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

The first album my sister bought was Culture club. I bought a Billy Joel album as my first album the same day

I wish my first album had been Culture Club OR Billy Joel. The first one I bought was Motley Crue and wound up confiscated by my mother (don't even remember why). It's pretty sad, really. I only bought that tape for one song (Home Sweet Home). I'm not even sure I liked the rest of the tape. ;)

My second album was Jackie Wilson - Reet Pettite for the title track song. the rest of the album was so samey I was disappointed.

I think that's the worst part about buying albums... it's such a crap shoot, especially when dealing with a new artist.

I remember at uni watching the video on VH1 for Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl".

It was so funny to see them working on this car moving their spanners in time to the music. Whenever it came on, the cry would go up "syncronised spanners!!"

I saw Culture Club in concert on their reunion tour thing in 1999. It was fantastic!

Ooh, now that would be cool!! I'd love to see Culture Club!

And I used to love that BJ video. :)

It was a fantastic video, but it was so funny to see them all waving their spanners in time to the music.

So, a couple of things.... First off, OMG I loved that telemarketer call. That was inspired.

Second, as to music, have you listened to any Dan Zanes & Friends? We have found that not only is his music great for her, and rapidly has become her favorites, but we actually enjoy listening to most of it, and I've even put a bunch of his music in my main playlists.....

We actually saw Dan Zanes last summer in Abilene when we went out to see Rachel from Signing Time. It was a blast. I have a couple of his albums. :)

The telemarketer call makes me wish I was more quick to respond to stuff like this. That was pretty darn funny.

Here are a couple of songs that my kids like:

Kyle's FAVORITE is from the 60s not sure who sings it but the song is The Ink is Black. He asks to hear it every time we get in the car and knows over half of the words to it.

One of Eddie's favorites is Peaches by the Dead Presidents.
[info]sm00bs wrote:

Peaches is a good one. I'll have to remember that. I don't recognize the other one.

Well, this could be a nice challenge for me since I don't have any kids, and I'm not really conscious of kid-friendly lyrics. But I'm up for it! I think it would be fun.

Are you on Swap-Bot? This would be an awesome swap!! See mine here:

http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/11782

Do you use iTunes? That's usually what I use for making cd mixes... but if you can't use iTunes format I can do it another way (I think).

I've never heard of Swap-Bot. I'll have to check it out. It seems pretty cool from first glance.

I haven't installed iTunes yet. I meant to do it on the desktop but then I was going to reinstall. I still plan to reinstall the desktop but it will probably be with Ubuntu and I don't think there's an iTunes for Linux. I still might install iTunes on the laptop, though.

Hey, did you ever hear from the recruiting department at Radiant?

With my luck they'll contact me when I'm out of the country! Haha...

Not necessarily "appropriate" at this point, but it would make YOU laugh... have you heard the Toddler Song? Cracks me up.

When they were little, we listened to a lot of Disney music. I loved those. Megan particularly loved Cher at 2- she could belt out every one of Cher's songs. (in your last "meme" post, the Cher song listed there was renamed in our house. Megan called it the Yucky Music, but she knew every word of it.) Toby has always really liked Elton John. Go figure. Beyond the Disney stuff though, we have never had kid music. We listen to everything from Enya and Loreena McKennit to Ladysmith to Kenny Rogers to decade specific stuff. They both have pretty eclectic tastes now.

No, I haven't heard the Toddler Song... It's possible I found it on YouTube, but apparently the speakers aren't hooked up to the desktop (having a cranky computing experience tonight being in the office... I might have to move back to the laptop in the living room).

I have a feeling Sophie's taste in music is going to be all over the place as well. We have a pretty wide range of tunes playing.

i liked both videos, but the kids rock one was slightly better. at first i thought they somehow got the actual artists to do it because it sounded so realistic. but the alanis morrisette one was so crappy that i knew it was all fake.

I thought the same thing about the Kids Rock video and realized right around Alanis Morissette that it was fake as well. I thought it was pretty well put together. :)

The other video is something I seriously wish I could pull off. That was just priceless.
