Today, while minding my own business, out of the blue I receive the following IM (on AIM).

[03/08/2008 - 13:29:09 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Stop * messaging me
[03/08/2008 - 13:29:33 PM] SM00CHIES: you must have typed the name wrong... i haven't messaged you
[03/08/2008 - 13:29:41 PM] SM00CHIES: i don't even know who you are
[03/08/2008 - 13:29:50 PM] IntriguingSalmon: This is the third time I've gotten a message from someone with "salmon" in their username
[03/08/2008 - 13:30:13 PM] SM00CHIES: interesting... i don't have salmon in my name... but you do
[03/08/2008 - 13:30:22 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Umm no I don't.
[03/08/2008 - 13:30:24 PM] SM00CHIES: see for yourself:
[03/08/2008 - 13:29:50 PM] IntriguingSalmon: This is the third time I've gotten a message from someone with "salmon" in their username
[03/08/2008 - 13:30:13 PM] SM00CHIES: interesting... i don't have salmon in my name... but you do

[03/08/2008 - 13:30:36 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Wtf..
[03/08/2008 - 13:30:37 PM] IntriguingSalmon:
intriguingsalmon (1:28): Hi.
Nauta (1:28): Stop * messaging me
intriguingsalmon(1:29): you must have typed the name wrong... i haven't messaged you
intriguingsalmon(1:29): i don't even know who you are

[03/08/2008 - 13:30:50 PM] SM00CHIES: okay, that's bizarre
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:10 PM] SM00CHIES: i haven't gotten any other salmon messages, but it's possible you have a virus?
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:35 PM] IntriguingSalmon: No, I highly doubt that.
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:41 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Someone is obviously screwing with me.
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:43 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Sorry.
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:50 PM] SM00CHIES: no worries... i hope you get it figured out
[03/08/2008 - 13:31:59 PM] IntriguingSalmon: thanks.

My money is still on Nauta having a virus. Of course, I could be wrong... Perhaps someone is actually messing with me! ;)

Edited to add:

[03/08/2008 - 14:58:46 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Hi.
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:15 PM] SM00CHIES: hello...
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:23 PM] IntriguingSalmon: hello
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:28 PM] IntriguingSalmon: ... person
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:36 PM] * SM00CHIES sighs
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:50 PM] IntriguingSalmon: ooooh it's commented out!
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:55 PM] IntriguingSalmon: programming person?
[03/08/2008 - 15:00:32 PM] SM00CHIES: question... did you message me first or did i message you first? i know what i see, but what do you see?
[03/08/2008 - 15:00:43 PM] IntriguingSalmon: I didn't message you.
[03/08/2008 - 15:00:48 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Do we know each other?
[03/08/2008 - 15:01:02 PM] SM00CHIES: you are the second intriguingsalmon to message me... and i'm guessing your u/n isn't intriguingsalmon, is it?
[03/08/2008 - 15:01:07 PM] IntriguingSalmon: no
[03/08/2008 - 15:01:14 PM] SM00CHIES: okay, have a look at this then:
[03/08/2008 - 15:01:22 PM] SM00CHIES:
[03/08/2008 - 14:58:46 PM] IntriguingSalmon: Hi.
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:15 PM] SM00CHIES: hello...
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:23 PM] IntriguingSalmon: hello
[03/08/2008 - 14:59:28 PM] IntriguingSalmon: ... person

[03/08/2008 - 15:01:42 PM] SM00CHIES: this is the second intriguingsalmon IM i've received...
[03/08/2008 - 15:01:52 PM] SM00CHIES: the person who messaged me, apparently i was their third
[03/08/2008 - 15:02:16 PM] IntriguingSalmon: wtf. that's bad
[03/08/2008 - 15:02:52 PM] SM00CHIES: i actually just mentioned it in my blog... if you do a google search on it, my entry is the only hit, as a matter of fact
[03/08/2008 - 15:03:20 PM] SM00CHIES: i'm going to go do a virus scan... you might want to do the same
[03/08/2008 - 15:03:30 PM] IntriguingSalmon: alright...
[03/08/2008 - 15:03:38 PM] SM00CHIES: sorry for any inconvenience!
[03/08/2008 - 15:04:03 PM] IntriguingSalmon: no. Thank you for your advice. I'm just slightly shocked. I thought you were my programming friend.
[03/08/2008 - 15:04:28 PM] SM00CHIES: i wish i could say i know how to program... unfortunately, I don't. ;)
[03/08/2008 - 15:04:52 PM] IntriguingSalmon: me neither. It's all awesome. :-)
[03/08/2008 - 15:05:58 PM] SM00CHIES: I'm going to close this window. If you'd care to message me again, feel free using any of the connections you can find for me except AIM. I'm going to close that since I'm not sure what's going on here. Nice chatting with you!! :)
[03/08/2008 - 15:06:12 PM] IntriguingSalmon: you too. good bye

Note: If this has happened to you or anyone you know, feel free to leave a comment here. I'm interested now. Anonymous comments are welcomed, but please feel free to sign your name.

ETA part deux: Apparently, all parties involved have been hatted. Why, I have no idea. It was certainly interesting! If you check the comments below, you can see [info]fleathemagician did a little more digging than I did and came up with [info]themissinghat. Bizarre. Very bizarre. Thanks, [info]fleathemagician!

Had you recently posted to your journal? I'm not sure if it looks at communities or if it just looks through personal journals, but apparently according to the Wiki entry, the bot uses LJ's most recent posts and goes from there. Very interesting! I guess this isn't the only name the bot has used, either.

Check out [info]themissinghat for more people who've been hit. ;)

Pretty nifty, now that it's figured out, right? This has been going on since at least some time in 2006 (perhaps earlier, who knows).

Glad I could help!!

I had someone else on my friends page have a similar thing happen to them a few times last week. weird.

What I think is SO crazy about this is I was posting like mad last year, always have AIM open (well, I use Trillian, but it's still got an AIM connection open) and this has been going on since 2006 or earlier.

I'm also pretty surprised you haven't been hit. ;)
[info]kingdavey wrote:

I very rarely use AIM. I used to use Yahoo before Pixie and I started living together, so that we could chat together. I haven't got anyone listed as a friend on any of the IM sites (billy no mates me!)
[info]sm00bs wrote:
Mar. 9th, 2008 02:34 pm (UTC)
Well, that makes a lot more sense, then. ;)

I guess the requirements of this are to have the AIM name listed in the profile, to have AIM running (or some version thereof), and to have posted to LJ recently.

I'm actually hoping it happens again, now that I know what it is, you know? I'd love to let someone else in on the game. Whenever you get bored, check out the community. There are some interesting posts there. ;)

Very Interesting. I don't use AIM, but I must admit I'm very tempted to get one just to see if I can get "hatted" LOL...
[info]sm00bs wrote:

I am very curious to see why all of a sudden I was hatted today... twice, even. This has been going on since at least 2006 and I've posted lots of entries in that time, almost always with AIM open (via Trillian). Perhaps I had bots blocked... or non-friends blocked... who knows.

It's pretty interesting, I think. There was someone who just posted to the community mentioning having an alternate SN for the salmons and getting caught by the bot master. It's all so crazy. Seems to be a fun game, although it also seems to annoy some people greatly (that * in my post was the f-bomb!). ;)

That's the main reason I kept adding to it. It was driving me nuts there was nothing coming up when I Googled! :)

Glad I could help!!

Very curious... Never happened to me, but then I don't use AIM, only MSN (well, it's Pidgin on Ubuntu) and don't have an IM username listed.

How bizarre.

Yeah, you can proudly say "I've been salmoned". Or whatever it is!

LOL Yes! Some are sticking with the original, "I've been hatted," but some are going with, "I've been salmoned." Very odd stuffs.

Definitely. It's one of the things mentioned over and over at themissinghat.

I almost hope it happens to me again so I can help someone else be clued in.

Hi it got me, too. KingDavey pointed me towards your post.

So... what are we supposed to do with it? Anything? I got hit by "ThinkingSalmon" today.

Any idea? Haha just ignore it and be proud to have been involved in a social experiment?

Yeah, there's not really anything to do. If you don't want it to happen again, you can either remove your AIM information from your profile (unless your AIM name is the same as your profile name, in which case that might not make a difference), or make sure you're signed out of AIM for a bit whenever you post. The cool thing is you can actually pass this along to anyone who might wind up messaging you via the bot again.

I've read at the missing hat community that the bot will translate screen names and other such things, so it's not always possible to know what's going on. Right now there are a slew of Salmon names going around. People aren't sure if the salmons are the same as the hats, but it's basically the same principle.

It's pretty interesting, I think. Sometimes the person on the other end of the salmon isn't always pleasant, but sometimes they're okay, especially when they realize what's going on.

If you're interested in learning more, check out the community. There are some pretty interesting posts there. People strike up conversation with the botmaster via the bots somewhat frequently, it seems. It's all rather geeky, but still interesting. :)
